Requirements
What you need to run TunnelRez.
Windows PC
- Windows 11, 64-bitRequired
- Installs per user, no admin needed.
- NVIDIA GPU with NVENCRecommended
- RTX 20 series or newer for the native low-latency path: HEVC, AV1 and H.264 straight from the NVENC SDK. AV1 needs a GPU whose NVENC encodes AV1.
- NVIDIA driver 610 or newerRequired
- Native NVENC uses NVENC API 13.1 (Video Codec SDK 13.1), which needs driver 610. With an older driver it stops with a clear error and Auto falls back to FFmpeg.
- Intel, AMD or no GPU encoderWorks, with limits
- FFmpeg fallbacks in this order: NVENC, Intel QSV, AMD AMF, Media Foundation, then the CPU. A laptop CPU manages about 40 to 48 fps for HEVC or AV1 at 4K, so on that machine the CPU path is 1080p60 only. The app tests each one and greys out what can’t keep up.
- Virtual monitor and TV speakerBundled
- The Parsec virtual display driver (0.45) and a virtual TV speaker driver come with the installer. Installing a driver asks for admin once.
TV
- Android TV, API 26 or newerRequired
- Android 8.0 is the floor, because AAudio and the native MediaCodec API need it. API 29 (Android 10) or newer turns on the low-latency Wi-Fi lock and the decoder performance checks.
- Hardware HEVC decodeRequired
- A hardware HEVC or AV1 decoder. The TV sends its real decoder list, and the app greys out codecs and sizes the TV can’t do.
- A decoder that does 3840 × 2160 at 60Recommended
- For 4K60. A cheap stick that drops frames at 1080p will not get there.
- ADB for the first installRequired
- Turn on Developer options, then USB debugging or network debugging, and accept the prompt on the TV with the remote.
Network
- Wired, or 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-FiRecommended
- A cable is best. On Wi-Fi, a clean 5 or 6 GHz channel (Wi-Fi 6 or 6E) with a strong link. 2.4 GHz, mesh hops and a wall of neighbors will show on screen.
- 40 Mb/s at 1080p60, 100 Mb/s at 4K60Recommended
- The rates our runs use. TunnelRez sends a fixed rate with no safety padding, and more is not better on Wi-Fi.
- Router settingsRecommended
- WMM Power Save off, QoS (WMM) on, band steering off.
- If your network is bad, this isn’t for you
- No codec fixes a crowded channel or an ISP router on default settings. Keep the network dialed in and it holds up.
Tested on
- PC
- A laptop with an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti GPU, Windows 11.
- TV
- An Android TV built on a MediaTek MT5895, with the MediaTek low-latency decode path on.
- Network
- Home Wi-Fi.
